Thoughts on the Industry

Nothing inspires me more than companies who use their products and business to make a difference in the world. We're all familiar with Sun Chips - those delicious, somewhat "healthier" chips. They come in unique flavours like French Onion, Harvest Cheddar & Garden Salsa...? Well, on the last bag that I bought, I noticed a unique URL (startawave.ca) on the back that they were leading me too. Intrigued, I visited the website and fell in love with the brand. Not only did they use a Canadian artist to launch the campaign (and give this campaign a little proud Canadian flair), but they applauded people whose individual actions, however small or large, have created a positive "wave" and inspired those around them.  They call these people the "Wave-Makers" and had them tour the country with Hayley Sales for two weeks. When you go to the website you can read all about the wavemakers, or you can start a wave yourself by sharing stories of inspiration and positivity. It's a beautiful message.  What an inspirational tour. Talk about making an ordinary product, extraordinary.

If and when this alledged downturn happens, it will be interesting to see if businesses will do what they always do and cut marketing as part of their belt tightening.   I think the smarter play is to rationalize your marketing by focusing more on niche plays.  You can really address a niche with "New Media" as you can create specific pages and paths on your website for the niche to follow.  The good news is that it is easy to measure this type of campaign and will easy to see if you are getting your money's worth. Start taking advantage of the 90%+ of the population that is sourcing everything now with the click of a mouse.

Video the new norm? PDF Print E-mail

Videos are the new and cool way to engage your customer more effectively. People are curious creatures and it makes sense that we are anxious to press the play button. I came across a stellar example of the effective use of video in a Happy New Year video newsletter I received from Mountain Equipment Co-op. It not only allowed me to play a streaming video, but also brought me directly to their Facebook page. Here, there were other messages that I may be interested in including archived videos, product offerings, and an events calendar.  This is a prime example of the importance of creating that initial "hook" that will draw people into your site.  Click here to see where I was directed.

Video sharing sites like youtube.com, are encouraging the average Joe to create and share their videos online. It is to no surprise that this technology has trickled into the marketing world and is now a very important element of the marketing mix.  Technology is allowing big and small companies alike to easily implement video into their marketing strategies.  Read more about this.

It's time to get excited about video and spice up the old with the new.

Recently we have been researching the use of Social Media for all of our clients and our own company. It seems these days that if you're NOT on facebook, whether it's a personal page or a company page, you're crazy. Having just completed some research on the best use of Facebook for company practices, I thought I'd share.

Add a Little Personality to your Brand PDF Print E-mail

Mitch Myerson is a great internet marketer.  I recently viewed a short video on his blog that talked about adding some of your own "personality" to your brand.  Click here to watch it. I completely agree with this.  Anything that makes you  "remarkable" and "memorable" is an asset to your organization - providing it is in alignment with the essence of what you do.  Check out the Hep Team page to see how we have added personality to our site.
