Okay, before anyone jumps the gun on my title, it’s not “that” kind of friendly (though I’m still curious why the social network gives you the opportunity to list your marital statu). What I’m referring to instead is a particular group that has caught my eye and the curiosity of numerous others in the business networking platform.
The group is called “Friends of Winnipeg“, and if you’re not in it (either actively or monitoring activity), you’re missing out.
First, for those not familiar with LinkedIn Groups, these are gathering places for social networkers who are able to exchange ideas, place job advertisements (FREE!) and connect up with individuals who they normally would have to go through other routes to network with (or not be able to at all).
The reason I suggest this group in particular, especially to my clients during our Lunch ‘n Link sessions, is because of the nature of activity. Here, the topics broaden to not just job opportunities, but also to other facets of life. Posts that I’ve come across include people looking for contractors for their homes, moving companies and even apartment rentals.
In particular, the “New Winnipegger” community (i.e. those moving to or back to the city) has embraced this group, asking questions about life in the River City. They’ve networked and found answers to anything they would ever want to know about our Manitoba capital.
Naturally, this means new customer potential for your business, but also gives you the chance to spread the word about what you do in Winnipeg. While I would discourage direct advertisements (since you want to be warm and inviting when talking to individuals here), it does give you the opportunity to advertise the new position you have open or promote a cause you are involved in. It’s also a great place to show your expertise in response to queries associated with your work!
